Write for us!

We’re looking to add new voices to our digital news and culture media outlet publication thing. (Maybe you could help us come up with a better way to say that.)

Since launching last summer, NJ Indy is growing fast, bringing in more readers every month since then. Now, we’re looking for people who have a passion for storytelling, and for New Jersey, to join our crew as a freelance writer.

NJ Indy is born out of the alt-weekly lineage of papers; that is, we cover culture, arts, music, food, drink, weed and recreation, and we like featuring human beings. We use our voice to add color to stories, but we report truth. We think this makes it more enjoyable for the reader, and more impactful in the community.

And we like writers. It doesn’t matter what your style or level of experience is. You want to write profiles of people at the grocery store? Great. You want to write an epistolary feature with letters between you and an Italian sandwich? Yes please. You want to scan the police blotter and get us 250 words on a car crash by 1 o’clock? Don’t you fucking dare.

It’s OK if you don’t have much experience. We’ll work with you to improve your writing. You just bring curiosity, a willingness to improve and a lot of passion.

Our coverage sphere includes culture, arts, music, food/drink and the outdoors. That said, we’d particularly like to find someone who wants to dive into the food scene; profile food pros from chefs to crawfish trappers; pitch inventive stories about local food trends; pull up to the old spots, try the new ones; and build a following among local foodies.

We’d also, particularly, like to find an outdoor enthusiast who can seek out NJ recreationists, ultramarathoners, climbers, cyclists, etc. and write engaging adventure stories about their experiences. It’d be great if you also cared about sustainability and could find stories that blend adventure and environmentalism. And it’d be really great if you liked adventure, too, and wrote about your own travels to the state’s best outdoor spots.

But, again, we want writers. So if you’re not a food or outdoor enthusiast, let us know what you do like (and that’s in our sphere of coverage), and we’ll see what we can do. We pay—not much, honestly—but enough to, hopefully, be worth your time.

If you’re interested, send Editor Matt Cortina an email at matt@njindy.com. Include whatever writing experience you have, what you’d like to cover, maybe some story ideas, if you want. Looking forward to hearing from you.
